Having learned about Article One from David Stork, the Chief Scientist at Ricoh California Research Center, this week’s Featured Researcher is Dr. Xu Liu from Cupertino, California. With 15 pending U.S. patents, and one pending Chinese Patent, Dr. Liu is no stranger to the world of patents and patent research.
Currently, Dr. Liu is working as a senior software engineer at Tango.me, which he calls “a lean startup of 10M mobile video calling users.” With a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Maryland and a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science form Tsinghua University in Beijing, Liu focuses mainly on multimedia systems when conducting research for Article One.
Article One Partners: What do you like best about being an Article One Researcher?
Dr. Xu Liu: I enjoy rediscovering intersecting things in the short history of computer science. The most interesting part is finding the history of a specific study, why it was brought to court and how many big names are involved.
AOP: How do you choose which studies you participate in?
Dr. Liu: I look at all the studies related to computer science and try to find the most “obvious” ones to crack.
AOP: Which research tools do you frequently use?
Dr. Liu: Google, USPTO, freepatents.com , IEEE and the ACM database.
AOP: What is your primary language? Are you fluent in any other languages?
Dr. Liu: My primary languages are English and Chinese.
AOP: What advice would you give to a new Researcher participating in his/her first Article One Study?
Dr. Liu: My advice would be to treat researching as a hobby.
AOP: What would you say to somebody who was considering becoming an Article One Researcher?
Dr. Liu: I’d tell them to give it a try since there’s nothing to lose. There’s a pretty high chance you’ll find something very interesting.
