Featured Researcher: Eric R.

This week’s featured researcher is Eric R. from Ellicott City, Maryland. Eric is a software engineer who received his BA from Johns Hopkins University. He learned about Article One from a recent news article. He had no experience with patent research before becoming an AOP Researcher, but says that he enjoys the experience because it involves a knowledge base in which he has personal interest.
What skills are the most useful in your research with Article One?
Interest in, and good memory of, the history of technology.
What is the most challenging aspect of Article One Research?
Due to the requirements of the legal artifacts that need to be presented, finding the right documentation can be challenging.
What online resources do you use in your research?
Enthusiast websites that collect actual materials that were in-use when they were current technology.
What offline resources do you use in your research?
Some of my clients are very old line technology companies, I often use their resources.
What are your Top 3 Tips for being an AOP Researcher?
1. Look outside traditional resources -- anyone can find the obvious
2. Only take topics in which you will genuinely enjoy the journey
3. Leave time to reach out to human experts and get useful feedback
What is the most exciting story or discovery you have made while searching for prior art?
Mostly taking a trip down technology memory lane. No specific discovery, but taking a chance to revisit technology I have enjoyed in the past.
